About the Writer
Casey McCabe started his writing career as a freelance journalist, publishing articles and essays in Mother Jones, Cosmopolitan, Premiere, Detroit Free Press, San Francisco Chronicle, Creem, The Nose, and a long list of now defunct print publications. He maintained his freelance ways writing advertising and corporate communications for a wildly diverse portfolio of Fortune 500 and nonprofit clients. Casey drifted into award-winning playwriting and WGA screenwriting, including spec sales and assignments for DreamWorks, Universal Pictures, New Line Cinema, and 20th Century Fox.
He is the co-author of the massive graphic novel The Silver Cord, in collaboration with Wired co-founder Kevin Kelly, and co-writer on the acclaimed public tv series Mexico: One Plate at a Time in collaboration with celebrity chef Rick Bayless.
Casey is a cheerful husband and proud father of two living in San Rafael, California. Goodnight Earth is his first novel. His quixotic venture to find an audience for his work will be chronicled here.
About Goodnight Earth
Goodnight Earth started as a screenplay. Coming off some dark political thrillers I’d been working on, I wanted to write something that would feasibly entertain my two young kids. I did a quick mental survey of the most memorable children’s films and why they survive – for some reason either one or both parents need to be dead — then created an adventurous and timely premise for Goodnight Earth and happily watched the characters and plotlines fall into place.
I was fortunate to find an A-list producer who loved the screenplay. She believed Goodnight Earth had the makings of a “four-quadrant” film, the kind that would appeal to the four key filmgoing demographics who don’t often overlap. Two major studios were in play, and for a hot moment Hugh Jackman was interested in the role of Saturday Blue. But the most persistent concern we got was that Goodnight Earth would be too expensive for a film not based on an underlying property: a previous film, a book, a comic, a tv series, a graphic novel, a beloved toy. In a world of risk-avoidance it needed to be pretty much anything other than what it was – an original screenplay.
Everyone involved got involved in something else and that was the end of the story. Ten years later it occurred to me that as a writer I could write that underlying property. When I shifted to a novelist’s voice, the story came alive in new and wondrous ways. It was the most fun writing I’ve had in my life.
Of course, the best children’s stories aren’t simply for children, and this book aims for the four quadrants who make up virtually everyone on Earth. It’s also true that science-fiction has long provided cover for writers who want to explore socio-politics and the human conundrum without sounding like a didactic asshole.
